Christmas travel dreams shattered! West Australians found their holiday plans in disarray this week, as repeated flight cancellations by Vietnam Airlines left them stranded and their festive getaways in jeopardy.
It all began with a flight to Ho Chi Minh City, initially scheduled for the early hours of Sunday morning. Due to a technical glitch, the flight was canceled right before takeoff, causing significant disruption for many passengers.
Perth resident Chloe George, who had eagerly anticipated a Christmas cruise in Vietnam, shared her frustrating experience. She was initially told to return to the airport at 11 AM on Sunday. However, the flight time kept getting pushed back, first to 6 PM, then to 8 PM.
"Everyone went back to the airport on Sunday evening but half an hour before boarding they told everyone it was cancelled again," she explained. This led to long queues at customer service as passengers scrambled to find alternative flights or seek refunds.
Ms. George expressed her disappointment, especially given the extensive planning that had gone into the trip. "We have saved and planned for this Christmas and New Year’s trip for eight months," she said. While acknowledging the importance of aircraft safety, she criticized the airline's lack of empathy. "A cancelled flight once is disappointing but two flights in a row is just ridiculous. I have no idea why they got everyone to go back and check in again the following day if the aircraft hadn’t been fixed."
But here's where it gets controversial... While safety is paramount, the repeated cancellations and lack of clear communication from Vietnam Airlines left many feeling abandoned and frustrated.
And this is the part most people miss... The ripple effects of these cancellations extended beyond just the initial flight. Ms. George's entire itinerary, including a cruise on Ha Long Bay and an overnight sleeper train, was impacted.
