A shocking case of medical misconduct has come to light, leaving patients vulnerable and the medical community shaken. A Toronto doctor's license has been revoked, exposing a disturbing pattern of harm and negligence.
The Ontario Physicians and Surgeons Discipline Tribunal made a bold decision this week, stripping Dr. Ashwin Rajan Maharaj of his medical license. The tribunal's ruling highlights a series of grave errors and unethical practices that put patients at risk.
Maharaj pleaded no contest to disciplinary charges, accepting the consequences without admitting guilt. The tribunal's decision outlines a disturbing pattern of misdiagnosis, unnecessary procedures, and a lack of informed consent.
"You performed anorectal examinations that were unwarranted and potentially harmful, even under propofol anesthesia without proper justification," the college stated. "Your lack of knowledge in anatomy and treatment options is concerning."
But here's where it gets controversial... Maharaj's actions went beyond misdiagnosis. He performed procedures that were not evidence-based or recognized, putting patients' health at risk. The tribunal further accused him of obtaining blanket consent, performing procedures while patients were sedated, and failing to obtain specific consent for each treatment.
"This approach is a grave breach of trust and compromises patients' right to make informed decisions about their healthcare," the tribunal emphasized. "Your documentation was inadequate, and your conduct fell below the standard of practice."
The tribunal's investigation revealed a pattern of deficiencies. Seven patients complained about Maharaj's assessment and treatment between 2019 and 2025, with an independent expert concluding that the care provided fell below acceptable standards. A subsequent review of 10 patient charts uncovered similar issues, including misdiagnoses and unnecessary procedures.
"Your actions placed patients at an unacceptable risk of harm," the tribunal wrote. "You demonstrated a profound disregard for patients' privacy by failing to properly store and destroy sensitive images and sharing personal health information without consent."
And this is the part most people miss... Maharaj's misconduct extended beyond medical practice. He misrepresented his qualifications, holding himself out as a surgeon despite not being certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The tribunal stated that he breached regulations by doing so.
The former doctor's history with the College's Inquiries, Complaints, and Reports Committee dates back to 2003, with issues related to documentation, consent, and adherence to standards of practice. Despite multiple cautions and counseling sessions, Maharaj failed to improve.
"The scope and seriousness of your misconduct is profound," the tribunal emphasized. "Patients deserve safe, evidence-based care, and your actions have resulted in the revocation of your certificate of registration. We believe this severe sanction is necessary to protect the public."
On June 17, Toronto police charged the 62-year-old former doctor with criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The status of those charges remains unclear.
