The 80th Sydney to Hobart yacht race witnessed a dramatic turn of events as Min River emerged victorious, overturning the initial result due to a protest. This double-handed yacht, skippered by Jiang Lin and Alexis Loison, claimed the Tattersall Cup after a successful protest against the New Caledonian-flagged BNC.
Min River's achievement is historic, becoming the first double-handed yacht and the first female-skippered yacht to secure the overall handicap win. The challenge was formidable, as Min River had to bridge a 54-minute handicap gap behind BNC to claim victory.
The protest was grounded in a breach of the Australian Racing Rules regarding 'sheeting sails'. The issue arose during the final two nautical miles of the 628-nautical-mile race, where BNC allegedly used a pole to secure the spinnaker sail during the finish, violating the rule.
The rule in question states: 'No sail sheet be sheeted over or through any device that exerts outward pressure on a sheet or clew of a sail at a point from which, with the boat upright, a vertical line would fall outside the hull or deck [except in some conditions].' A sheet, in sailing terminology, refers to a rope or cable controlling the sail's movable corners or clews.
Co-skipper Lin emphasized the importance of fairness, stating, 'A rule is a rule.' The protest was initially lodged by Min River, but it was later supported by the race committee, who had also witnessed the breach. The international jury's decision upheld the protest, leading Min River to withdraw its own protest.
Race committee chair Lee Goddard justified the penalty, explaining that BNC's use of the spinnaker sail in an inappropriate manner provided an unfair advantage. Despite not deliberately breaking the rule, BNC's actions were photographed, confirming the breach.
Min River's triumph was celebrated by Lin, who praised her co-skipper, Loison. The yacht, named after the river flowing through Fujian, China, where Lin's parents grew up, finished the race in under four days. Lin's decision to choose Loison as her co-skipper proved to be a wise one.
