Imagine a father's worst nightmare: watching his child battle a life-threatening illness and desperately seeking a lifeline. This is the reality for a single dad in Malaysia, who's launched a fundraising campaign to save his daughter, Mirabelle, from a rare form of blood cancer. He's aiming to raise a staggering RM2 million (approximately S$631,900) to send her to Singapore for potentially life-saving treatment.
Mirabelle Kua Han Fay, a bright 15-year-old from Melaka, has been diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a particularly aggressive type of blood cancer. The situation is critical, and time is of the essence.
According to a recent donation drive launched on the One Hope Charity and Welfare's website, Mirabelle needs to begin a specialized immunotherapy treatment called Car-T cell therapy in Singapore this week. This decision was made after exploring all available treatment options in Malaysia, which, sadly, proved unsuccessful.
"Doctors have emphasized that starting Car-T treatment in Singapore as soon as possible is crucial," the charity's page explains. "This is her best chance at survival, and the sooner the treatment begins, the higher her chances of success." They estimate her chances of recovery could be over 80 percent if the treatment is successful.
But here's where it gets controversial... The family's journey began on September 9th of this year when Mirabelle developed a fever. Despite undergoing four rounds of chemotherapy, the cancer markers didn't decrease, pushing doctors to recommend immediate treatment in Singapore.
The primary obstacle standing in their way? The daunting cost. The RM2 million they hope to raise will cover the Car-T therapy itself, essential medical tests, medications, hospital stays, and any potential stem cell or bone marrow transplant that might be needed.
Mirabelle's father, Soon Leng, works as a car window tinting salesperson, earning RM3,000 a month. This income supports both Mirabelle and his elderly father. Her parents divorced when she was young, but her mother has returned to help care for her since the diagnosis, offering additional support during this challenging time.
In a heartfelt video shared on the charity's Facebook page, both parents plead for donations. "If she doesn't begin treatment now, she will lose her life," Soon Leng says, his voice filled with desperation. Mirabelle herself, speaking from her hospital bed, adds, "I want to live... please don't give up on me." She also expressed her wish to return to her previous life.
As of the time of this writing, the fundraising efforts have already garnered RM1.35 million from an incredible 9,580 donations.
