She expressed her dismay, stating, "I paid for air travel, not a long bus ride." The situation was particularly frustrating as this crucial detail was only revealed after she had already returned her rental car and arrived at the airport, with no prior clear warning that her only option to reach her destination would be by road.
While Qantas maintains that they sent out multiple alerts, including a text message informing affected travelers about the bus replacement, Ms. Di Fiore recalls receiving a text message that simply stated her flight had been rebooked. The message read: "We are sorry for the cancellation of your flight QF2046 from Melbourne to Albury on 1 March 2026. We understand that disruptions are frustrating. To help get everyone to Albury as planned, the original flight will now operate as a bus service from Melbourne. Please proceed to the arrivals hall. The bus will depart from Melbourne at 12:00pm. We are doing everything we can to get you on your way. Please see email for details."
And this is the part most people miss... Ms. Di Fiore, understandably reluctant to take the bus, chose to stay the night in Melbourne and fly to Albury via Sydney the following morning, as no earlier flight was available. Qantas did offer some recourse, reimbursing her $200 for accommodation and providing $30 in cash gift cards for food and drink. However, Ms. Di Fiore pointed out that her out-of-pocket expenses for transport to and from the airport, along with her self-sourced accommodation, exceeded the $200 reimbursement.
Ms. Di Fiore isn't just seeking personal compensation; she's advocating for the reinstatement of the direct Melbourne to Albury flight and fair treatment for all affected customers. She emphasized, "This is not so much about me chasing compensation. This is about chasing something that is fair for our community, which is connectivity and knowing that we have a reliable service."
Adding to the sentiment of disappointment, local aircraft enthusiast Lyle Taylor, who had planned to catch this final flight as a personal tribute, was also left disheartened. He had even prepared a special T-shirt for the occasion! Despite his long-standing support for Qantas, Mr. Taylor ultimately opted to fly with a competitor, Virgin Australia, even after receiving a refund of $120 and a substantial 19,000 Qantas points. He also mentioned that a recent Qantas flight from Melbourne to Wagga Wagga also faced cancellation, with passengers being offered either a wait for a later flight or the bus to Albury, from where they would need to arrange their own onward travel.
A Qantas spokesperson confirmed the Wagga Wagga cancellation (flight QF2036) and stated that passengers were offered overnight accommodation and a recovery flight the next day via Sydney. It was also confirmed that some passengers did indeed opt for the bus service to Albury to make their own way home.
