The Pittsburgh Pirates are making a bold, and perhaps surprising, play for star pitcher Framber Valdez! This move has raised eyebrows, especially considering the Pirates' already strong pitching staff and apparent need to boost their offense. But what if this isn't as illogical as it seems? Valdez, who turned down a qualifying offer from the Astros, is a significant free-agent acquisition. For the Pirates to land him, they'd likely have to part with their third-highest pick in the 2026 draft. This is a hefty price, but one that could signal a serious shift in Pittsburgh's strategy.
At first glance, it might feel like the Pirates are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. They've cultivated an impressive group of young, up-and-coming starting pitchers. However, here's where it gets strategic: By acquiring Valdez, the Pirates could then leverage their surplus of talented young arms. Imagine using this depth to trade for a much-needed offensive bat! This could be the key to unlocking their full potential.
As the offseason has progressed, the pool of available trade targets has shrunk. But the Pirates have options. They could potentially engage with teams like the Diamondbacks for Ketel Marte, the Red Sox for Jarren Duran or Wilyer Abreu, or even the Nationals for CJ Abrams. Of course, some of their most prized young arms are untouchable. General Manager Ben Cherington has made it crystal clear that Paul Skenes is not on the trading block. But beyond Skenes, the Pirates boast a rotation that includes Mitch Keller, Braxton Ashcraft, and Bubba Chandler. Add to that Jared Jones returning from surgery and promising young talents like Hunter Barco, Thomas Harrington, and Wilber Dotel on the 40-man roster, plus high draft pick Seth Hernandez, and you have a remarkably deep pitching stable.
And this is the part most people miss: Pairing Valdez with Skenes would create an absolutely formidable one-two punch at the top of the rotation, potentially one of the best in all of baseball! Valdez, at 32, has been incredibly durable for Houston. Over the last four seasons, he's thrown a remarkable 767.2 innings with a 3.21 ERA, a 23.9% strikeout rate, a 7.9% walk rate, and an astonishing 60% ground-ball rate. Only Logan Webb has pitched more innings among qualified starters in that span. His ground-ball rate is among the best in the league, and his ERA places him among the top starters.
Now, for the potentially controversial part: Signing Valdez would almost certainly require the Pirates to offer the largest contract in franchise history. While they've shown a willingness to spend, reportedly offering $120-125 million over four years to Kyle Schwarber, Valdez is seeking a long-term deal. It's worth noting that securing multi-year deals for pitchers 32 and older is rare. In the last 15 offseasons, only three free-agent pitchers aged 32 or older have received five-year contracts: Blake Snell, Jacob deGrom, and Zack Greinke. All of them had stronger Cy Young résumés than Valdez currently boasts. Is this a calculated risk worth taking for the Pirates?
Currently, the Pirates' projected payroll is around $95 million, which is close to their all-time record. Their pursuit of Valdez, along with past interest in Schwarber and Eugenio Suárez, clearly indicates a desire to significantly increase their spending.
There's also the possibility of a shorter-term deal for Valdez with opt-out clauses, a strategy we've seen from other high-profile free agents. It's unclear if Valdez is open to this, or if Pittsburgh is even considering it over a traditional multi-year commitment. While the Orioles have been heavily linked to Valdez, the Blue Jays remain in contention, and teams like the Braves, Giants, Mets, and Red Sox have also been mentioned.
