Get ready for some thrilling Olympic action as we showcase the incredible athletes from the Ottawa-Gatineau region who are representing Canada and other nations at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics!
A Region's Pride
Dozens of athletes with deep roots in Ottawa-Gatineau and its surrounding areas are stepping onto the world stage, ready to showcase their talent and bring glory to their hometowns. From speed skating to hockey, these athletes are determined to leave their mark.
Speed Skating Sensations
The National Capital Region is well-represented on the oval, with three exceptional athletes racing for Team Canada. Isabelle Weidemann and Ivanie Blondin, both from Ottawa, are favored to medal in the long-track events. Their first race, the 3000-meter, is scheduled for Saturday, so mark your calendars! Joining them is Cédrick Brunet from Gatineau, who will make his Olympic debut in the 500-meter race. With a family full of Olympic and professional athletes, Brunet is sure to bring the heat.
But here's where it gets controversial... Should we be concerned about the pressure on these athletes to perform? Can they handle the expectations of their hometown fans?
Alpine Skiing Siblings
Ottawa's very own Schmidt siblings, Jared and Hannah, will once again don the Team Canada uniform, this time on February 20 and 21. They'll be racing in the ski-cross event, a thrilling display of speed and agility. Also representing Canada in alpine skiing is Valérie Grenier from St. Isidore, who will compete in the Super-G, downhill, slalom, and combined events. With five World Cup medals under her belt, Grenier is eyeing a podium finish at her third Winter Games.
Biathlon and Bobsleigh
For those with an interest in biathlon, keep an eye out for Zachary Connelly and Shilo Rousseau, both with connections to Ottawa. They could team up in the 4x6-kilometer mixed relay on February 8. In bobsleigh, three athletes with Ottawa ties are part of Canada's team, including former Carleton University football players Mike Evelyn O'Higgins and Jay Dearborn. Keaton Bruggeling, a former Carleton Raven and Ottawa RedBlack, will join them for the four-man event.
Cross-Country Skiing and Curling
Two veteran cross-country skiers from the Gatineau area, Antoine Cyr and Katherine Stewart-Jones, will represent Canada at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium. Stewart-Jones and Cyr will kick off the Games with the skiathlon on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. And let's not forget about curling! Team Homan, featuring Ottawa natives Rachel Homan and Emma Miskew, will be going for gold at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium.
Figure Skating and Hockey
Eastern Ontario is also well-represented in figure skating, with Trennt Michaud from Trenton and Paul Poirier from Ottawa taking to the ice with their partners. Poirier and his partner, Piper Gilles, are considered medal hopefuls in the ice dance category. In hockey, players from Ottawa's professional teams will face off against their teammates in the Olympic tournament. Three forwards from the Ottawa Charge will suit up for Canada, including captain Brianne Jenner, who is aiming for her fourth Olympic medal. Players from the Charge and the Ottawa Senators will also represent the U.S. and other nations.
And this is the part most people miss... The impact of these athletes extends beyond the medals they win. They inspire the next generation of athletes and showcase the talent and diversity of the Ottawa-Gatineau region to the world.
