The Virginia Tech Invitational was a showcase of swimming excellence, and one athlete's performance stole the spotlight! Jakub Poliacik, a sophomore sensation, left everyone in awe as he shattered records in the 1000-yard freestyle event.
A New Benchmark: Poliacik's remarkable timing of 8:56.52 not only secured him the event win but also etched his name in the Virginia Tech record books. This astonishing feat erased the previous program record of 8:57.86, set by Lane Stone in 2018. But here's where it gets even more impressive: he swam over eight seconds faster than his previous lifetime best of 9:05.12 from November!
Pool Record, Smashed: The young talent didn't stop there. He also claimed the pool record, which had stood since 2012 when Florida State's Mateo De Angulo set a time of 8:58.97. Poliacik's performance was a testament to his hard work and dedication, leaving no doubt about his rising star status.
His teammate, Lee Naber, also deserves recognition for his outstanding performance in the same event. Naber's time of 9:03.65 earned him a career-best and a place in the program's history books as the 6th fastest swimmer in the 1000 free.
Dominance Across Events: Poliacik's talent wasn't limited to the 1000 free. He also clocked a career-best time of 4:17.64 in the 500 free, securing the 4th fastest spot in the event's history. This time was a significant improvement from his previous best of 4:18.69, set just a month earlier.
Sophomore Eli Martin also made his mark in the 100 breaststroke, tying for 16th in the nation with a career-best time of 51.56. This performance solidified his position as the 3rd fastest in the program's history, a remarkable achievement.
Speed and Records: Brenden Whitfield, a Hokie junior, showcased his sprinting prowess in the 50 free, setting a new pool record. His time of 18.95 was just a whisker away from his season-best of 18.94, which ranks him 15th in Division I this season. And this is the part most people miss—he was only one hundredth of a second off the pace from breaking his personal best of 18.89 set at the ACC Championships last season!
The women's team also had their share of glory. The 400 medley relay team, consisting of Carmen Weiler Sastre, Emily Santos Silva, Athena Meneses Kovacs, and Emily Claesson, demolished the pool record with a time of 3:33.37. This achievement improved their own 2021 record and placed them 26th in Division I this season.
And the women's 400 free relay team, featuring Weiler Sastre, Claesson, Fanni Gyurinovics, and Eliza Tan, also lowered their previous pool record, set just a year ago. Their combined effort of 3:15.48 is now the 24th fastest time in Division I this season.
The Virginia Tech Invitational proved to be a record-breaking affair, with Poliacik's performance as the centerpiece.
