A Disturbing Scene at Ramsgate Cemetery: A Tale of Disrespect and Misunderstanding
A recent visit to Ramsgate Cemetery has left many visitors appalled and furious. The scene they encountered? Piles of wood and plastic barriers covering graves, an act that has sparked outrage and raised questions about the respect shown to the deceased and their loved ones.
The incident began when the local council announced that work had been carried out to clear a fallen tree from the cemetery. However, what followed was a stark contrast to the expected tidiness and care. Luther Oakes, who had meticulously kept a family grave tidy, returned to find it covered in waste, an act he described as 'disgusting'.
Chris Peebles, another visitor, shared her horror story. She had gone to the cemetery to pay her respects to her grandmother and great-grandparents, only to find their plot obscured by logs and barriers. Her disgust was palpable, and she voiced her complaint to the council, hoping no damage had been done.
The Thanet District Council's response was twofold. They acknowledged the clearing of the fallen tree, which resulted in a significant amount of vegetation and debris. However, they also emphasized their intention to provide an important habitat for wildlife by keeping the large tree trunk, which is not situated on any graves.
The council's plan to remove the remaining debris on Monday and Tuesday, ahead of the festive season, has not appeased all concerns. The question remains: How can we ensure that such incidents do not occur again, and how can we restore the dignity and respect that these sacred spaces deserve?
