Boston's culinary scene is a bustling hub of activity, and this week brings a mix of exciting openings, closures, and special events. One of the most anticipated openings is the second location of All'Antico Vinaio, the Italian sandwich sensation that took Boston by storm when it first opened in 2025. The new spot, located at 330 Washington St., promises to bring the same mouth-watering Tuscan flatbreads and unique sandwiches that made the Back Bay original a favorite among locals. The original location, at 565 Boylston St., attracted massive crowds, and the new spot is expected to follow suit, so be prepared to wait in line for your fix of La Favolosa, a bestseller slathered with salame Toscano, artichoke and pecorino cream, and spicy eggplant.
For those with a sweet tooth, Salem’s Ye Olde Pepper Candy Companie is offering a unique experience with its pop-up pantry at the 1715 Clough House at Boston’s Old North Church. Through Halloween, visitors can sample Colonial-era confections, including the famous lemon and peppermint Salem Gibralters, and delve into America’s confectionary history, complete with original manufacturing apparatus and photos.
Unfortunately, not all news is positive. Cambridge’s acclaimed natural wine bar, Dear Annie, will pour its last glasses on July 31. Owner Lauren Friel cites operational challenges, motherhood, and a changing restaurant scene in Greater Boston that has become more corporate as the reasons for the closure. The space will be used for bespoke events starting sometime in September, led by Friel herself.
Looking ahead, Zinneken’s Waffles will pop up in front of Boston Common this winter, serving warm Belgian waffles, coffee, and ice cream. There’s another location in Harvard Square, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to indulge in this winter treat. Additionally, Cafe Sushi Nisei in Cambridge is introducing a weekly Izakaya Night, offering chalkboard specials like lobster salad inari and toban jan tuna tostadas, plus chef’s choice nigiri and sashimi, along with drink specials including sake cocktails. The Izakaya Night will be held every Tuesday starting July 14.
For those who love sausages, the Best of the Wurst Festival at First Street Market on July 25 is a must-attend event. Will Gilson (Puritan & Co.), Tony Susi (Little Sage), and chefs from Bar Mezzana, Formaggio Kitchen, Gufo, Il Casale, Merai, Revival Cafe + Kitchen, Sarma, and State Park will create sausage dishes in partnership with the National Mustard Museum. Visitors can vote for their favorite beginning at noon, and tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for kids under 12.
