Get ready for an intense battle as the American Heritage Patriots aim for their second consecutive Class 4A state title! In a thrilling rematch, they face the resilient Orlando Jones Tigers at FIU's Pitbull Stadium in Miami.
The stage is set for a nail-biting finish, just like last year's encounter. With less than a minute left and a 33-28 lead, the Patriots' special teams stepped up, recovering a crucial muffed return by Jones' DJ Hicks. This pivotal moment sealed the deal, sparking a wild celebration on the Patriots' sideline.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The Tigers, with a record of 12-3, were denied a final drive, and their dreams of a first-ever state championship were dashed. Was it a fair call?
And this is the part most people miss...
American Heritage, with a 9-5 record, took a knee to secure their seventh state title. It was a hard-fought victory, following a wild seesaw battle in the second half.
The Class 4A championship game lived up to its billing, with both teams showcasing their skills and determination. After a tight first half, American Heritage seemed to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring Jones 19-0 to take a commanding 26-7 lead.
Sophomore running back Tremaine Mullen, a rising star, ran for a 5-yard TD, showcasing his talent. Senior quarterback Leon Strawder threw a TD pass to Jamar Denson and then ran for a score, putting the Patriots in a strong position.
However, Jones refused to back down. Senior quarterback Dereon Coleman, a Miami signee, kept the Tigers in the game with his arm and legs. He threw a TD pass to Larry Miles and then scored on a 1-yard keeper, bringing the Tigers within striking distance at 26-21.
But the Patriots had an answer. Mullen scored his second TD of the day, pushing the lead to 33-21. His outstanding performance earned him the game's Most Valuable Player award.
Jones fought back once more, with Coleman and Miles leading the charge. Miles scored on a 1-yard run, cutting the deficit to five points again.
With the game on the line, Jones had one last chance. But a muffed punt and a ticking clock sealed their fate.
Statistically, it was a close contest. For AHS, Strawder completed 12 of 18 passes for 173 yards and two TDs, and ran for 72 yards and a score. Denson caught three passes for 70 yards and two TDs, while Mullen ran for 84 yards and two scores.
On the other side, Coleman had an impressive performance, completing 13 of 19 passes for 163 yards and two TDs, and rushing for 137 yards and a score. Miles and Hicks also contributed with key catches and runs.
American Heritage has faced a tough schedule, losing to some of the best teams in the state. They've won five state titles and are a force to be reckoned with. Jones, on the other hand, has been on a 10-game winning streak and was seeking their first state championship.
